Crosshairs Tips and Tricks: Screen Zoom

crosshairs tips

I've gotten a few requests from users to add a magnification mode to Crosshairs, so you can make sure you're lining up the overlay pixel perfect, much like you can with a color picker app (like Hues). I most likely won't build this directly into Crosshairs since there already exists a solution to the problem that works perfectly: screen zoom.

If you're not aware of it, Mac OS X has a built-in feature called screen zoom. You can use it in any app by holding control and using the mouse scroll wheel. (I believe it's enabled by default, but if not, you can enable it in System Preferences > Mouse. Update In Lion it has moved to System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing, under Zoom options, enable the "Use scroll wheel with modifier keys to zoom"). This feature magnifies the whole screen instead of just a small area, and will follow your mouse. It's really fast to use and works great. I use it all the time with other apps, and has been my de facto way to line things up precisely from day one with Crosshairs, so I made sure it works flawlessly.
